The distant and noble origins

of Podere Soccorso are linked to the life of one of the family’s ancestors, Prof. Riccardo Paccagnini, who has recently been described as “a pioneer of Brunello” and was one of the first winemakers from Montalcino to become involved in the sales of this wine. It was here, in fact, that in 1870, the first wine to bear the “Brunello” label was created, obtaining important acknowledgements in Rome, Paris, Marseille and Bordeaux. Numerous certificates, medals and prizes were awarded to Brunello Soccorso in the 1800s, all of which have been kept by the estate, being historical documents of fundamental importance.

The Tiezzi Wine Estate

bears the name of its owner, Enzo Tiezzi, a well-known agronomist-oenologist from Montalcino, who has always worked in the winegrowing and oenology sector around Siena, particularly in Montalcino, where for years he has been director and oenology consultant for estates of outstanding fame, as well as being part of the executive management and Chairman of the Consortium for Brunello di Montalcino.

In the 1980s, Mr Tiezzi decided to set up his own business and established the estate with the purchase of “Cerrino”, the first of the three areas, known as “poderi”, that make up the whole estate as it is today, followed, a few years later, by “Cigaleta”. His love of Montalcino’s history and his search for tradition led Enzo Tiezzi to annex the historical “Soccorso” land parcel to the estate.

The Tiezzi estate consists

of three separate “poderi” with a combined surface area of about 10 hectares, situated in different locations throughout the Montalcino district, 5.50 of which are cultivated with Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino) and 3 with olive trees. Cigaleta and Cerrino are about 3 km northeast of Montalcino, along the Brunello road, heading towards Siena, at an altitude of 350 m above sea level.

The heart and the most precious part of the estate is the historical Podere Soccorso, which is home to the cellars, office, retail sales area and holiday farm.

The Vineyards

located in Podere Cerrino and Podere Cigaleta are cultivated using the spurred cordon technique, with low yields per hectare. All the vineyards are tended to with the utmost care, using special agronomic methods, by the owner and his specially selected staff: manual pruning, thinning, meticulous selection of the bunches and manual harvesting to achieve only the finest results.

The vineyard of Podere Soccorso is just a stone’s throw from the old town of Montalcino, adjacent to the 14th century walls and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Succour), facing southwest at an altitude of about 500 m above sea level. It is cultivated using the “alberello” (bush) technique to restrict production and particularly the visual impact, making the most of the aesthetic effect with the elimination of columns and rows. The Soccorso vineyard looks like a garden set on hand-built stone-lined steps, adorned with roses at the end of every row of vines, its perimeter created by aromatic Mediterranean plants, forest fruit bushes, fruit trees and olive trees.

The Cellar

is organised personally by Enzo Tiezzi according to tradition, following the school of thought that prefers Brunello di Montalcino produced in compliance with the old rules: the grapes ferment in wooden vats and ageing takes place in Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of 10/40 hl, carefully monitored with constant tastings.
